Record label Hyperdub has announced the release of ‘Diggin’ In The Carts: A Collection of Pioneering Japanese Video Game Music’, a compilation album sure to awaken the inner gamer in you. Featuring music from such consoles as the NES, SNES and Sega Genesis, and computers like the MSX, MSXturboR and the PC-8801, the LP comes from the documentary of the same name directed by Nick Dwyer for Red Bull Music Academy.

The documentary series claims to chronicle “the history and global influence of this exciting early strain of electronic music.” While the label has stated: “some of the greatest art is created within limitations, and often the most pioneering and influential periods in electronic music have resulted from artists pushing existing technology to its limits.” Among the 34 tracks listed, Soshi Hosoi’s ‘Mister Diviner’ from “The Majhong Touhaiden“, Kazuo Hanzawa’s ‘Oblivious Past’ from “Alien Soldier“, and Hiroyuki Kawada’s ‘King Erekiman’ from “The Legend Of Valkyrie“, seem to be standouts.
