1. Cabaret Voltaire  – ‘Billion Dollar’

Ahead of the forthcoming Cabaret Voltaire EP, ‘Shadow of Funk‘, released via Mute on 26 February, Richard H. Kirk (on his own now!) recently shared the first taster called ‘Billion Dollar‘. An electro-industrial/techno banger that keeps growing and growing especially after the 1st minute mark with a transcendent arpeggio, ideal for the dystopic future dancefloor. On endless repeat!

Captain Kirk, thank you for this ‘billion dollar’ treasure!

  1. Klangkarussell – ‘Plastic’

Austrian, accomplished duo Klangkarussell kick off 2021 with ‘Plastic‘, “a commentary on consumerism. The poignant vocal tells of a world – our world – where people are more disconnected than ever from each other, from themselves, and from the planet that they live on. And, as it fills with plastic from our endless appetite for consumption and convenience, how we’ve begun to take that form and become ‘plastic’ ourselves“, they explain.

A stunning audio-visual production, with imposing, moody downtempo atmosphere, and a gradual build-up preparing the listener for the dramatic crescendo…

The track is out on their own Bias Beach Records imprint.

  1. Matthew Thomason – ‘And The Abyss Gazes Into You’

What could someone expect from a track titled ‘And The Abyss Gazes Into You‘? In the case of Cornwall-base composer Matthew Thomason, nothing less than a pure masterpiece. 3 minutes of captivating ambient/drone music with neoclassical finishing touches, which could easily serve as soundtrack for an a la “Hardware” post-apocalyptic flick.

According to Thomason: ‘(the track was) written during the first major lockdown in 2020, it was a reflection of how I was feeling and how I saw the world at that time. I intentionally kept all patterns repeating to try and find some structure and solace in the ever-increasing chaos of the outside world.’

Need some euphoria right now! And to be honest cannot think of anything better than Ritual Cloak‘s ‘Opaque Crater‘. A 4-minute amalgam of kraut with post rock, built upon a sublime, melodic chord which is the track’s spine, and  continuously expanding to a whirlwind of positivity. Ideal for a wide-open road drive with this one at full blast!

Opaque Crater‘ is the first single from the duo’s just released second album ‘Divine Invasions’ on Bubblewrap Collective.

  1. Departure Lounge  – ‘Australia’

Departure Lounge, Tim Keegan (vocals/guitar), Chris Anderson (lead guitars/keyboards/bass), Lindsay Jamieson (drums/keyboards) and Jake Kyle (bass/guitar/drums), have teamed up with living legend Peter Buck (lead guitar duties!) for ‘Australia‘, an ultra catchy, 24-carat, jangle pop anthem that ‘sounds like a great lost R.E.M. single from 1989‘!
