Greg Sher – alto saxophone, Tom Sly – trumpet, Joel Trigg – Fender Rhodes, Oscar Neyland – double bass & Chris Cameron – drums & percussion, are coming from Melbourne, Australia and are The Rookies. Their most recent release is the geniusly named On The Shoulders Of Giants, and is an idiosyncratic blend of nu jazz, bold improvisational spirit and distinctive gypsy folk elements, especially in its bombastic climax that reminded me of Goran Bregovic’s Balkan jazz fusion sound.
In this sublime composition the quintet is joined by Eamon McNelis – trumpet, Jack Beeche – soprano & baritone saxophones, James Macaulay – trombone, Kyle Chenoweth – trombone Brennan and Hamilton-Smith – clarinet & bass clarinet.
