Edmonton’s dynamic twin duo, Retrofile, returns with their third single, Modern Tricks, a sneak peek from their upcoming EP slated for release on September 14th. The track exudes a bittersweet vibe that beautifully complements the poignant lyrics, made even more potent by a Fleetwood Mac-inspired three-part harmony in the chorus. Modern Tricks effortlessly melds indie rock, indie pop, and dance pop elements, crafting a captivating yet wistful melody. The siblings’ musical prowess shines through as they masterfully capture the essence of multiple genres, delivering a tune that’s both irresistible and tinged with melancholy.
Speaking of the new single, member Noah Martino explained: “Modern Tricks started out as a one-minute demo we wrote during one of the Covid-19 lockdowns. We wrote the music first and then Luke improvised most of the lyrics on the track. The song is about our relationship with social media. With time, we have noticed an increased proclivity towards individuals using their social media as a self hype machine. The key lyric here is “are you preaching to the choir or playing the idol?”. The line between the performer and audience has certainly become blurred. It’s all a bit forced and fake, hence the title ‘Modern Tricks’.”
