New York-based artist Nick Marks, known for his ‘cinematic jazz electronica,’ recently unveiled his debut EP, Cinematic Chromatics Vol. I, and the opening track, Prelude/Arc of Light, serves as an excellent entry point to this captivating sonic journey. In this two-part feature, the first section, Prelude, pays homage to Marks’ impressionist classical influences, reimagining these principles within a modern ‘jazztronica’ context. The track is brought to life by a 21-piece string orchestra and a bassoonist from the Budapest Art Orchestra, creating a main theme that undergoes a thrilling transformation in the second half of the song. The ensuing part, Arc of Light, seamlessly blends future-soul, jazztronica, and big band elements, demonstrating Marks’ ability to fuse jazz, orchestral, and neo-soul influences. His piano solo, punctuated by the full ensemble, takes listeners on an epic journey, showcasing his keen arranging skills and innovative timbres reminiscent of iconic film composers.
Prelude/Arc of Light is a masterful composition that traverses diverse musical landscapes, proving Nick Marks to be a boundary-pushing artist in his genre.
