Portland, Oregon’s Neon Wilderness recently unleashed their new album, SICKOS, and within it, Genius of Pain shines like a vintage crooner pop diamond. The simplicity of a piano and the heartfelt vocals are more than enough to fill the void, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the most intimate moments of Television Personalities blended with the melancholic landscapes of Wild Love-era Smog. Then, a grand synth breaks in to lift the experience to another level. The echo, reverb, and the lo-fi rock minimalism may not be for everyone, but for those lone spirits seeking comfort in underdogs’ music like this, it’s absolutely fucking brilliant and powerful stuff.
