Mike Casey‘s Ghazal, the second single from the album The Beauty of Everyday Life, is an impressive nearly 7-minute jazz fusion piece where the saxophone takes center stage. Written in 2019 while in Spain as part of his master’s thesis at Berklee College of Music’s Valencia campus, the composition challenged him to blend seemingly disparate cultural influences without sacrificing the spontaneity and edge of jazz. The track draws inspiration from India, the Middle East, and Persia, reflecting the rhythmic cadence and couplet phrasing characteristic of the “Ghazal” style found in those regions.
This exemplary fusion creates a rich tapestry of sound, with continuous transitions in pace and moods, that celebrates the beauty of everyday life.
