Copenhagen-based artist & producer HunBjørn‘s recently released EP begins with the title track, ‘In The Eye‘, a magical synth-pop number that genuinely combines the “twisted” Nordic pop of Fever Ray with the catchy appeal of Kylie Minogue. It’s a classy, immaculately produced track with vocals that penetrate our being and shimmering synths coupled with divine melodies. As you start to wonder what could follow this super hit and keep your interest, ‘Words Don’t Disappear‘ sets off in a magnificent, hollow way, with out-of-this-earth vocals and spacey synths dominating the soundscape. It’s a mid-tempo electropop elegy for broken hearts, with a chorus that hits hard and grows to reach a grandiose climax. While less catchy than the grand opening, it’s infectious enough to keep the interest intact. ‘When You Wing It‘ pumps up the energy and captures attention with its super dynamic sound and Björk-like soundscapes. It’s avant electropop at its finest, with timely transitions in pace and mood to avoid any kind of repetition. Provocative, infectious, and genuine, it’s perhaps the most artistic track of the EP. ‘Out Of My Control‘ is another dynamic track with a more rock-oriented approach, featuring seductive vocals. It sounds like a space elegy about surrendering to another person, being in the grip of your emotions, and daring to let go. The final track, ‘It Burns‘, closes the EP in an absolutely eerie atmospheric way, dedicated to the broken-hearted. Pay attention to the lyrics, which speak about the courage to let go of a bad relationship.
Overall, what I loved most about ‘In The Eye‘, is the fact that it remains otherworldly in sound, but absolutely humane in emotion and lyrics. Artistic and catchy at the same time, it is very well crafted, from its production and mix to the lyrics and vocal expression. Every single element was paid attention to and detailed meticulously; An unforgettable musical journey from start to finish.
