Don Shimoda – ‘Inner Sanctum’ (Feat. Ben Beal)
About Don Shimoda
Don Shimoda is a resident of Southern California, having Gangster Rap influence his flows, with a love for East Coast style beats. “Don Shimoda” is an ode to two of Shimoda’s favorite characters in “The Teachings of Don Juan” (Carlos Castenada) and “Illusions” by Richard Bach. Stylistically, Don Shimoda’s bars are a mixture of wit, introspections, life lessons, spirituality, stories and streams of consciousness. He has been influenced by Archetypes such as MF DOOM, J Cole, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Ghostface Killah when it comes to Emcees. Production used by Shimoda is usually a brash boom bap beat to a SoCal summer song, exploring the different cadences between these two polarizing coasts. His first single Burn Em’ Up was made when Shimoda was questioning on whether or not he should pursue Hip Hop, and realizing that he has a lot to bring to the table, while some have forgotten the core elements and foundations of hip hop. It is an ode to the old school and a perception shared to all of the new school rappers. Also the proud father of 2 cats and too many plants.

Bess Atwell – ‘Red Light Heaven’
About Bess Atwell
There is comfort in the familiar. Yet it is precisely when we are most comfortable that we begin to ask questions. Artist Bess Atwell is full of questions: on life, death, love, loss… and how things that at first seem mundane become profound when looked at in a different light. “Co-op” is an exquisite work that unfurls like one of those first precious blooms of spring; luscious ripples of guitar surround Atwell’s crystalline vocals (that will undoubtedly draw favourable comparisons to the likes of Marika Hackman and Julia Jacklin). Her lyrics switch between the past and present tense, offering polaroid snapshots of a time where refuge and routine took precedent. It’s a charming vignette of Atwell’s life with her partner; a relationship that provided “some sort of permission to recuperate from family trauma”. It lays the groundwork for the ensuing exploration of what drives us to seek comfort, and what drives us away from it. This is perhaps most evident in her referencing Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway in the line, “It’s the laughter, it’s the plunge”. That scene – where the title character looks out at a peaceful view and is suddenly overwhelmed by dread that something terrible is about to happen – encapsulates what Atwell is trying to understand through her music.

Uyemi – ‘Inside Of It All’
About Uyemi

Uyemi landed in the Top 100 of CBC’s Searchlight contest in 2020 for her self-empowering single, “Don’t Get in Your Way,” about choosing the wrong people in love and loving yourself first before loving another. Since then, she’s released a number of singles and become a go-to vocalist in the Alberta music scene. The singer has collaborated with artists such as Jae Sterling and A.Y.E., having appeared on his recent video for “BLACK,” a potent celebration of Blackness.
