Tariq – ‘Coquihalla’

About Tariq

Tariq is a Juno nominated songwriter and recording artist with a music career that spans over two decades. Born in rural Quebec to parents from Pakistan and Fiji, Tariq grew up on a healthy diet of Bollywood soundtracks. Then, in high school, he got his hands on a guitar and started writing songs which sounded more like Cat Stevens and Neil Young than Mohammed Rafi. By the end of the nineties, Tariq had released two full-length albums, Splat, and The Basement Songs. The Basement Songs, which came out on EMI Music Canada, earned him national radio play as well as a Juno nomination for “Best New Solo Artist.”
Into the early aughts, Tariq went on to release more music—two albums and one EP—independently and through small imprints. In 2009, he joined the ranks of the Vancouver based band, Brasstronaut. Since joining, this critically acclaimed act has been putting out music and touring extensively in both Canada and in Europe in support of their records.
Tariq’s latest offering is Telegrams, his fifth full-length album and follow up to the 2013 Moonwalker EP. On Telegrams, the songs feel a bit like short stories, hence the title—three-and-a-half minute snippets of fictional lives. A fan of short fiction, Tariq found characters in stories by some of his favourite authors, like Lorrie Moore and Roberto Bolaño, and cast them as leads in his songs. Written in his apartment on an acoustic guitar, the songs were eventually shaped by a band who helped him envision fresh tempos, feels, and arrangements, adding layers of texture and melody. The result is a ten-song album with thoughtful lyrics and singable melodies reminiscent of artists like The Mountain Goats, and John K. Samson.
Sometimes though, those Bollywood soundtracks still play for him somewhere in the background.

Hunter As a Horse – ‘New Light’

About Hunter As a Horse

After a two year hiatus, Hunter As a Horse return with their third EP release, ‘Walk With Fire’.

Drawing from years of high altitude isolation, olive cultivation and Hendrix mixtapes on repeat in the Tuscan mountains combined with an impulsive rediscovery of their roots in native South Africa, ‘Walk With Fire’ is the sequel to 2016’s ‘The Two Magics’, contributing four new tracks to their necromancer’s charter.

Opening track ‘Walk With Fire’ heralds a folkore-imbued salute to re-asserting control of the past to navigate the future, while the thudding guitar riffs of ‘The Drums’ summon a parasomnic Mother Nature to battle, culminating on the edge of a climactic ‘The Abyss’ . Whilst the dreamy 80s tinged nostalgia of ‘New Light’ portraying friendship, sharing experiences and living in the moment. draws the ceremony to a close.

Featuring in commercials from Mercedes Benz and in American television series’ such as ‘Riverdale’ and ‘American Horror Story’, Hunter as a Horse look to continue producing, developing and exposing not only their own music but that of new artists via their recently launched Johannesburg-based music label Bad Future Records.

Goldroom – ‘U’ (feat. Chela)

About Goldroom

Debuting with the Angeles EP in 2011, Goldroom emerged soon after the dissolution of Legg’s former band NightWaves. “I’d been writing all these songs but had no outlet for them, so people suggested I start a solo thing,” recalls Legg, who borrowed the name Goldroom from a dive bar in Echo Park (“a good place to get drunk and find answers to all of life’s hardest questions”). Though Goldroom was born from his then-burgeoning infatuation with the electronic world, the project drew closely from Legg’s near-lifelong experience in making music. Raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, he learned to play cello and guitar as a child and soon started writing his own songs and self-recording on a four-track. At age 15 he had a major musical awakening while teaching sailing on Cape Cod, where a group of college kids turned him on to the ’60s/’70s rock and folk artists who would eventually guide his own songwriting. After heading off to study at the University of Southern California, Legg discovered Air, Daft Punk, and other electronic artists whose music “made me feel things I didn’t know that I could feel.” He then began his journey toward crafting boldly inventive electronic music with a classic-pop songwriting structure at its core.

MISSIO – ‘I See You’ Live Performance

About MISSIO

Countless hours of conversation between best friends, two weeks at a “ghostlike” desert ranch a stone’s throw from the Mexican border, and dozens of personal “firsts” after 18 months on the road inform, impact, and incite the songs on MISSIO’s 2019 opus, The Darker The Weather, The Better The Man [RCA Records]. Across the album, the bearded Austin, TX duo of Matthew Brue and David Butler siphon soulful alternative from an off-kilter symphony of analog synths, glitchy beats, and sinewy pop dissonance.
