Symbol Soup – ‘Oven Gloves’
About Symbol Soup
Symbol Soup is the moniker under which Michael Rea makes music which combines DIY rock with country, folk and glitchy electronics. In 2017, having played guitar for various other projects, he was inspired by artists like Phil Elverum, Alex G, and Sparklehorse to start creating music solo and self- producing. Coinciding with a move from London back home to Milton Keynes, the idea was to create something idiosyncratic and personal, beyond the standard guitar-band format.
In late 2018, Symbol Soup became a less secretive pursuit. The initial recordings (1 single, 1 EP, 1 LP) were released to streaming services, and friends Jonny Bennett (The Mighty Orchid King) and Will Stephen (June Logue) were enlisted to form a live band.
2019 Saw the release of the second LP, Participation Trophy, and a string of live shows across London, Brighton, Oxford, following which Symbol Soup were shortlisted (final 20) for the Green Man Rising competition. In October the first ‘Soupenanny’ event was hosted. These events, planned (pre- lockdown) to be 4x yearly at DSFL, take food bank donations for entry. They showcase fellow musical DIY-ers like Archie Valentine, Green Hands, as well as involving artists of other mediums like illustration, animation, poetry.
As of 2020, the live lineup now includes Hunter Mockett (Aaberg) and Henry Scanlan (Free Lunch.) Upcoming album Cattle Grid offers a funner, more playful take on the sound of previous releases. The homespun recordings are filled out with singing saw, accordion, field recordings and lap steel. Lyrically, songs lapse between conversational and surreal, exploring intimacy, disillusionment, mental health. It is also the first release to feature collaborators, with Pete Martin contributing trumpet, and vocals from Christy Thynne.

MΛD FVN – ‘People Are Strange’
About MΛD FVN
When I was 12, I was in an ATV accident with my brother. Then again, at age 21, I had an even worse ATV accident. Neither time was I the one driving, so other than them teaching me to never trust others with heavy machinery, they also left me with a constant, unnerving awareness of death. I realized that my biggest fear is not dying, but dying before I have the chance to give what I love, whether it’s people or passion, all that I’ve got was not an option. Those experiences gave me the gift of perseverance and perspective. I adore every moment of happiness, sadness, and everything in between, with music fueling my purpose to have a life worth living.
Music has always been my saving grace, my true passion, and my ultimate talent. Since I was a little girl, gathering crowds in department stores because I couldn’t help but sing and dance to Britney Spears playing on the store radio, I knew I was born to entertain. From singing, to dancing, to songwriting, to performing, I was born to be a singer like a cat to tearing apart furniture (I know, because I have two). Music gives me the power to embrace every part of who I am in my darkest times to my best moments, all while connecting with people from across the globe. Since growing up traveling the world, from living in Saudi Arabia to backpacking across Asia with my best friend, my ultimate goal is to connect the most emotional, raw, human parts of myself with people all over the planet through the power of music.
