keep calm stay home – ‘A Theme For…’

About keep calm stay home

In March 2020 when those lucky enough to have them found themselves confined within their own four walls keep calm stay home began.

During this time, as the usual day to day activity of finishing other artists work came to a close, the freedom to create was re-found.

By combining a love of organic sounds and textures with knowledge gained from years of electronic music production, live performance, and engineering, keep calm stay home is the result of a newly discovered freedom of expression without expectation.

Future Strangers – ‘Millennials’

About Future Strangers

Future Strangers is the new project from Matt Connelly, formerly making music under the moniker Retro Culture. After taking a 2 year hiatus from music to pursue a uni degree and help start a label with long time manager, Tom McGenniss-Destro, the project came to be after writing a series of songs that felt like the beginning of a new chapter. It was a clear shift in sound for the artist, moving away from the 80’s inspired Synthwave that RC was known for, as he returned to his guitar roots. The sound at times is reminiscent of the pop punk he grew up on (Blink 182, Green Day) blurred with electronic and modern production, bringing the sound forward in time, falling somewhere between The 1975 and DMA’s. There is a new found maturity to the song-writing which Matt puts down to “getting older and doing some growing up” and “just going through the ups and downs that life throws us all. I wanted to make a record about things that I really cared about. Maybe it’s naive of me, but I am hoping that in some way I can encourage others through hard times and also to stand up for what they believe in” he says about the new music.

The name Future Strangers comes from one of the songs written for the project, born out of the idea that ‘someone you know intimately can become a complete stranger’. A daunting yet fascinating notion. The project is eclectic in sound, ranging from ‘Millennials’ which would be a good one for the mosh pit, to the intimate fragileness of ‘Changes’ a track that details what it’s like to grow up and let go of your dreams and past relationships. 2020 is set to be an active year with the hiatus officially over.

Beatific – ‘She Loves Him’ (Marshall Watson Balearic Dub Remix)

About Beatific

Known for his sound design work, Elad Marish was a songwriter long before becoming a respected industry professional. While Beatific is not Marish’s first band or side project by any means, it’s the first collaboration between him and Jeremy Black, formerly the drummer of Apollo Sunshine and more recently known as a collaborator on the Bon Iver and The National-organized music festival PEOPLE.

Rounded out by programmer Will Bauer, percussionist Michael Pacis, and keyboardist Mike Forst, the deep partnership on Beatific yields an EP that sprawls with myriad sounds and influences intersecting its four songs.

“In our world, the distinction between genres is rather grey,” Marish told GroundSounds in a recent interview ahead of their debut Sunshine EP. Where lead single “She Loves Him” is a euphoric trip into sun-drenched psych-folk, Beatific quickly segue into “Smile Dangerous,” a bassy, strutting left turn into synth pop. The EP’s most personal moment, “Perpetual Contemplation of an Infinite Glory,” is a meditative unpacking of intergenerational trauma.

As wide-reaching as it sounds on paper, Sunshine is ultimately an eclectic, but focused journey into how we find our own beatific moments in a complicated world.
