Scratching my head for ideas, for what would be a proper introductory piece for Gianni Paci‘s ‘Make America Great Again‘ video exclusive for Last Day Deaf (feeling jubilant about this!), I will be frank and confess to you that obfuscated the message. So, I will keep it simple: straight to the track, Paci’s expressive and warm vocals blend ideally with the strong melody line, bringing to mind the great Roy Orbison.
Literally everything is by Paci himself, since he wrote, recorded, produced and performed all instruments, and in addition shot, directed, produced and edited the video, which is a homage to Bob Dylan‘s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues‘.
Press Notes:
“There was a time when everything seemed so right in this world,” Gianni suggests, as he grapples with the garbled rhetoric of our time and the fracas of the current cultural moment in “Make America Great Again.” Equal parts inscrutable and facetious, the social commentary somehow eludes direct bias, acting more like a mirror to our shared predicament than another hackneyed party line. Probing the national pulse as if we were deathly ill, Gianni lobs a series of alarmingly direct questions at the lot of us that are almost too crude to print. But if we don’t like what we see in our reflection, perhaps we ought to take some serious steps towards nursing ourselves back to health–or recovering our “greatness.”
Harkening back to another not-so-distant state of civil unrest, the accompanying self-directed music video pays homage to Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” “Make America Great Again” is written, recorded, produced and performed on all instruments by Gianni Paci.”
