Devon, UK based artist Daniel Schamroth released ‘Major Companion’ this past week; a 6-track sophomore solo EP, following 2022’s ‘Friend & Brothers’. ‘Major Companion’ was brought into this world with the help of So, Let’s Talk, an independent UK label with releases by other artists such as Roachford, Jody Watley, Alexander O’Neal and more. Recorded and produced by Grammy-winner Guy Massey (The Beatles, Paul Simon, Kylie Minogue), the EP is a collection of gorgeous stripped down British indie pop. Schamroth’s influences of Noel Gallagher and Ryan Adams are found twinged through every track in a gratifying manner, and the entirety of ‘Major Companion’ is filled with expressive lyrics, passionate vocals, and delightful strings. Arranged by Manchester composer Joe Duddell, the strings were recorded with a live orchestra at the North London studio famously managed by The Kinks, Konk. The sheer Englishness infused by that location can be felt clearly.
The EP begins with ‘Dying To Feel Alive’, a tune dripping 60s vibes ala John Lennon’s vocals on softer Beatles’ tracks, a clear highlight. ‘Rat Race’, Schamroth’s current single, soothingly contemplates the workforce and losing best days to the rat race. The track is gently angsty, hopeful, and slyly motivational, so throw it on as a pep talk while you debate changing careers or taking some time off. If you haven’t had your fill of Daniel Schamroth’s music yet with ‘Major Companion’, also be sure to check out The Loft Club, an indie band the fervent singer fronts.
