9+1 Q&A with SOLFERNUS

What inspired you to first start making music? And how did you come to be in your current incarnation? Or if you prefer, a brief bio about you.

The music itself is that trigger on which we put a finger. SOLFERNUS was originally true black metal project founded back in 2002, we played out some live shows and filmed also two videoclips to support the very first album “Hysteria in Coma”. We were quite hungry for this kind of art and mainly pretty spontaneous concerning live appearances, the corpse-paint image of the band and even though the original idea was just a studio project only, we got unexpected response in our country. Actual re-union is about the second album “Neoantichrist” which we released after twelve years. It´s more like re-incarnation;-)

Provide us with some info about your latest release…

„Neoantichrist“ is the second album from SOLFERNUS, containing ten songs in Black Metal way. We are closest to this genre but there are also some another styles´ touches. We used some acoustic guitar parts, a little keyboards and effects for better atmosphere in a few passages or for example broken glass after the opening track. We concentrated on details in terms of drums, guitars and mainly vocals. It´s another important part of this album because we recorded more vocals in each single song. You can hear catchy refrains, typical true black metal screaming but also vocal phrasing and understandable verses. Another relevant thing is that two singers are involved in this album. Khaablus was singing most of songs and I helped him with backing vocals. I did three songs as the vocalist and he was doing backing vocals for me then. We sang “That One Night” track even together as one. CD was released by Russian label Satanath Records for European and Asian areas. Mexican true Black Metal company Azermedoth Records did the same for Latin and Northern America. Online maniax can get the album in a digital form through Spotify, Youtube stream or iTunes.

Which ones would you consider your main influences both music-wise & non-music-wise?

We are the Influence. We reign in Hell – not serving in Heaven. We scream loud and you all must listen to us.

In what way does your sound differ from the rest genre-related artists/bands and why should we listen to your music? In other words, how would you describe your sound?

It´s different from genre-related bands ´cause we recorded all our albums at studios over here in Southern Moravia. That´s why SOLFERNUS sounds like no one else. We try to have classic live metal noisy sound and do produce the music by ourselves. You needn´t listen to our music, you just can do it.

Please name your 3 desert islands albums, movies & books…

The black album from METALLICA, “South of Heaven” of SLAYER and DISSECTION´s “Reinkaos”. Three movies would be THE GODFATHER trilogy anyway. Books: ROOT – Dark Roots, BRNO 1938 – 1945 and Bruno´s REVOLTIKON.

Do you prefer studio or performing live and why?

Both things can be inspiring, exciting and interesting. I like both performing live as well as a recording session. The most important fact is which people you are working with. If there are right persons with you so it doesn´t matter what you are doing.

Is there any funny-unique story you would like to share with us, always in relation to your music ‘career’?

There are so many stories and more or less funny things connected with the band´s career and I´m sure there will appear another ones in the future yet. Our singer Khaablus lent his wireless microphone to Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir at Brutal Assault Festival back in 2006… We had to cancel SOLFERNUS´ show two minutes before entering the stage many years ago at AFOD Open Air because of the insane thunderstorm… Each this experience is useful and inspiring.

Which track of your own would you point out as the most unique and why?

Hard to say title of the only track. Maybe that actual videoclip “Mistresserpent” can help you find the way to SOLFERNUS´ music ´cause thanx to visual perception this song means a bit more than others on the album but yet better would be to check out more tracks from the band, right? Right!
