What inspired you to first start making music? And how did you come to be in your current incarnation? Or if you prefer, a brief bio about you.

James Henderson: When I was a child, my older brother started playing guitar. I thought he was the coolest, so I got in on it as well. A little later I became fascinated with records and how they were made. I would get two portable tape recorders, hit boxes with coat hangers for drums and record that onto one. Then I’d play that recording and play organ or guitar along with it and record that onto the other machine, then repeat the process with different parts and vocals until I was satisfied with the result (which was never) or wanted to go do something else. MOTORCADE was born out of a conversation three of us had at a party. I had the name, the sound we would go after, we discussed the look, etc. Then we didn’t even get together to play for another four years. The first rehearsals were pretty good but we needed a bass player. We got one, and that’s where we presently stand.

Provide us with some info about your latest release…

James Henderson: I definitely wanted the new album to be an extension of the first one, just with a little more oomph. The drums and guitars are more “rawk” than on the first one. Of course, it took quite some time to finish having been made in the heart of the COVID restrictions. Progress was made in fits and starts. Sometimes months would pass without any work being done at all. But I don’t think it sounds like that. I was mindful of sustaining a cohesive feel throughout, although at times I felt like we should just release a bunch of singles or a couple EPs because it was taking so long.

Which ones would you consider your main influences both music-wise & non-music-wise?

James Henderson: Wire, Bunnymen, Banshees among others always loom large with MOTORCADE. Then people like The Who, The Beatles, Bowie that I’ve loved so long they just seep into whatever I’m doing whether I realize it or not. Non-music… No one in particular that I’m consciously aware of. There’s a vast amount of people I consider great or fascinating, but I don’t know if I’d call them influences.

In what way does your sound differ from the rest genre-related artists/bands and why should we listen to your music? In other words, how would you describe your sound?

Jeff Ryan: Genre specific really, we’re not trying to do anything other than play and record the music that we are into, and by all means it resembles what we all listened to in our formative years.

Please name your 3 desert islands albums, movies & books…

James Henderson: Ocean Rain by Echo and The Bunnymen, “A Clockwork Orange,” Stranded by Roxy Music, “Mad Max II: The Road Warrior,” Chairs Missing by Wire, “Sleepaway Camp.” I don’t love any books.

Do you prefer studio or performing live and why?

James Henderson: Studio by a mile. Working in the studio is a totally creative endeavor. Live is somebody else’s entertainment. Playing live is either a good night out or something like work.

Is there any funny-unique story you would like to share with us, always in relation to your music ‘career’?

Jeff Ryan: We have a completely different and vulgar set of lyrics to our first single “Recover”

Which track of your own would you point out as the most unique and why?

James Henderson: “Silent Voices” because it sounds like it should’ve been on the Blade Runner soundtrack.

Would you like to share with our readers your future plans?

Jeff Ryan: We’re just glad we can get back out and play some shows again, which we will do for the rest of 2022, and hoping to get back to the studio to record our third and possibly final album.

Free question!!! (Ask yourself a question) you wish to answer and haven’t been given the opportunity…

Jeff Ryan: When chopping wood do you prefer a single bit or double bit axe?

Double, of course! Well, each have their advantage. With single, your choices are either splitting wood or hitting the wedge. With a double, you can chop until your arms can no longer lift the axe. I usually have both on hand.-
