Oakland’s wild and gritty garage rock rebels, The Helltones, are dropping a fresh sound wave with their upcoming album, Medusa (releasing Nov. 17). They’re dishing out a beachy, modern doo-wop flavor, drawing from the wild well of psychedelic surf, soulful americana, and retro rhythm and blues. With harmonized backing vocals, sun-soaked hand claps, sultry organ riffs, and a guitar that’s been pushed to the edge, they’re painting a cinematic portrait of love, addiction, brawling, reconciling, and the chaotic journey into adulthood while keeping your wits. And if you’re looking for a tasty teaser, check out Black Star Pirate BBQ, a banger sung by the thunderous Cairo McCockran, an ode to the legendary but sadly departed BBQ spot in the Bay Area. We’re all out of luck on that front.
