By far the most difficult task of being the senior editor/publisher for Last Day Deaf is writing the obituaries of your own heroes. The Fall‘s Mark E. Smith is no more, since he unexpectedly passed away at the age of 60. The band’s manager Pam Vander stated on the social media platforms: ‘It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith. He passed this morning at home. A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.

Active since late 1976 til present, The Fall released 32 studio albums, while their latest was last year’s ‘New Facts Emerge. Smith had cited diverse influences in various interviews such as Colin WilsonArthur MachenThomas HardyPhilip K. DickEdgar Allan PoeRaymond Chandler, and H. P. Lovecraft among others, managing  to remain creative until his very end, energetic and above all a unique performer and a rock n’ roll anti-star!

Legendary Dj/music journalist John Peel, was one of the most dedicated Smith’s fans, having honoured him, with two Festive Number ones ‘Bill Is Dead‘ (1990) and  Inspiral Carpets ft. Mark E. Smith, ‘I Want You‘ (1994).

A true legend is not with us any more. A real singer, songwriter, musician and above all performer put out his tongue. Maybe it’s another joke… Til the next one… Bye Mark!
