Folk Devils – ‘Ink Runs Dry’

About Folk Devils

Taking their name from Stanley Cohen’s famous sociology text Folk Devils and Moral Panics, this post-punk ‘fearsome foursome’ was formed in Ladbroke Grove, London in 1983 by Co. Durham native Ian Lowery (formerly of The Wall and Ski Patrol) with a lineup that consisted of Mark Whiteley (Bass), Kris Jozajtis (Guitar) and Alan Cole (Drums). Throughout their 3-year lifespan, the band released several acclaimed singles and EPs including “Hank Turns Blue” and “Beautiful Monster” and recorded three sessions for BBC Radio’s John Peel Show. Musically their heady brew of swampy rock on a bed of bastardized blues created a vehicle for Lowery’s increasingly misanthropic worldview. A well-honed gutter poet since the early days of punk, Ian developed an idiosyncratic style, fusing a natural gift for sly wordplay and a well-turned snarky phrase with his often vitriolic and poignant lyrics channeled through an explosive onstage persona. Folk Devils gigged constantly, sharing bills with the likes of The Fall, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Gun Club and Screaming Blue Messiahs, and also toured extensively throughout Europe.

A second incarnation was short-lived (1986-87), consisting of Ian Lowery, Nick Clift (ex-Ski Patrol guitarist), Robert Mune (Bass), John Hamilton (Drums) and Saul Taylor (Saxophone). During this time, they released one 12″ EP of new material “The Best Protection” for the Beggars Banquet imprint Situation 2, and an anthology collecting all their earlier material entitled “Goodnight Irony”. Singer Ian Lowery sadly passed away in 2001.

The band reformed in 2016 with new singer Dave Hodgson (once of Parting Shots) and Hamilton and Clift joining the original members Kris and Mark to celebrate the release of an expanded retrospective CD/2xLP (with bonus demo recordings) called “Beautiful Monsters”. Since then, annual re-union shows around the UK with like-minded post-punk survivors like The Membranes, Inca Babies and The Cravats have placed the band back in the public eye and they continue to enjoy occasional radio support from BBC6 Music and regional outlets. A new EP “Forever”, recorded at Konk Studios in North London, will be released by Optic Nerve on September 18, 2020.

Tugboat Captain – ‘Day To Day’

Since forming, the band have released a pair of records, the latter ‘Everybody Seems To Think That I’m A Raincloud’, being awarded No7 Album of the Year by For The Rabbits and featuring Reddit endorsed single ‘Don’t Want To Wake Up On My Own’. In spite of the total DIY attitude the band have managed to accumulate over 500,000 streams on their Spotify, significant international radio play and a feature on Netflix Original series Terrace House

Madelline – ‘late night text’

About Madelline

Originally hailing from Connecticut, Madelline is an artist based out of Montreal.

Having recently acquired her own studio, Madelline’s entire process of making music was switched up – allowing her to take things into her own hands. Madelline’s forthcoming NOISE COMPLAINT EP was mixed over Zoom, her mixing engineer being a great musical partner who really helped get the vibe right.

Madelline spent days locked up in Mirabel, a small town outside of Montreal, from April to June – anxious and not knowing what to do but create. It was the only thing there was to focus on.

Even though she was staying at a friends house, the two barely saw one another except for meals and TV before bed. It was depressing but also productive – the only thing that gave Madelline comfort.
