1. Dead Little Penny – ‘Depression’

Ladies & Gents, lets welcome another band from the “land of promise”, New Zealand (Auckland-based at least but hailing from U.K.). After the last year’s magical debut self titled album by Bad Sav, here come Dead Little Penny! Guess what: This is another female fronted band (‘guitar-slinging’ vocalist and songwriter Hayley Smith) and on this one they play anthemic alternative rock, with addictive, jangly guitars and endless pace kept by Simon Buxton (drummer/synth player & the 2nd core member of Dead Little Penny).

This is what Smith stated about the track: “Writing this track was totally cathartic for me, because it’s something I’ve dealt with so many times – two people falling in love, who both have their own personal struggles and demons.

‘Depression’ is a nod to the many times in life that you can tell a potential love situation may be a complete train wreck, but being unable to stop your feelings, and wanting to stand by someone in their darkest times, even though you have yours too. So basically, life.

I’ve loved writing, recording and performing this song, because of it’s grungy nature and gritty vocals. It just gets it all out“.

An 100% cathartic experience for every alternative/indie rock fan!

  1. Astronoid – ‘A New Color’

A New Color‘ is taken from the sophomore album of the pretty unique quintet  from Massachusetts, Astronoid.  Their sound is a beautiful, hard to describe, hybrid, because it stands in the between of many genres such as blackgaze, post-hardcore, shoegaze and dream pop. Well, to make things more difficult, the band describes it as ‘dream thrash‘. Astronoid’s self-titled, second studio  album was officially released on February 1st via Blood Music.

  1. Star Horse – ‘Pickle Plum

From Star Horse‘s debut album ‘You Said Forever‘, we chose for this week’s mixtape the track ‘Pickle Plum‘; Although, the dream pop/shoegaze band from Stockholm have released quite a few singles and EPs, from 2012 to 2015, it was on Friday 15th, that their first full length album eventually got released (on Startracks). The chorus, along with the hazy vocals and the dreamy but ‘noisy’ guitars will steal your heart.

  1. These New Puritans – ‘Inside The Rose’

It’s been 6 years… But they are finally back with their 4th album on March 22nd on BMG. It was back in 2007 when they released their critically acclaimed debut. This one is the title track, a 5-minute audiovisual treat you’ll always remember. Accompanied by a great NSFW video directed by the award-winning photographer Harley Weir (in collaboration with George Barnett), ‘Inside The Rose‘ is a brave piece of genre-free creativity, in which anything could happen. So difficult to describe, like the extraordinary but fascinating aspect of our subconscious…  Prepare for goosebumps.

All hail These New Puritans!
