Ben Fox Smith – ‘I Want a Girl, I Want a Boy’

About Ben Fox Smith

Frank Black came out of the shower in a small towel, it was the first day of their tour together and Ben had not predicted the nature of his first meeting with his hero.

Ben Fox Smith is still painfully under-rated. At just 17 Ben signed to Big Cat Records (Pavement, Grandaddy) as the singer-songwriter for Stony Sleep (Peel sessions) and produced two seminal albums which took them around the globe.

After Big Cat was sold to V2 Ben formed Serafin and signed to Taste Media (Muse) and made an acclaimed album with Dave Sardy (Soulwax, Dandy Warhols).

Without compromise Ben embarked on an experimental musical journey producing 12 other albums and 2 E.Ps.

Taciturn Lanzerac is focused, playful and poignant and is out.

Nate Smith – ‘Oak Tree’

About Nate Smith

As a songwriter, singer and guitarist, Nate Smith offers songs for us to “swim together” through life’s ebbs and flows – help make sense of the truth in and around us – and maybe connect along the way.

His newest track, “Oak Tree” (set for release September 16) stems from the strife involved when connection is countered by self-destruction.

monkeybars – ‘New Face’

About monkeybars

monkeybars is the solo project of Brooklyn-based Eli Aleinikoff. A formally trained saxophonist, Aleinikoff effortlessly converts the nuances of his jazz saxophone background and appreciation for contemporary songwriting into a mist of punchy, contemplative pop. The project’s debut EP ‘Acrobats’ explores the complexities that lie under the surface of a single moment. Stark observations, lingering emotions, and personal reflections come together in an abstractly poetic fashion. Lyrically, Aleinikoff’s syntax serves as an instrument in and of itself. His multi-layered delivery kissed with reverb creates a space in which these narratives can exist – a mythic zone that feels neither real nor imagined.

The Naked Sun – ‘Secret We Both Know’

About The Naked Sun

The Naked Sun may or may not have coined the phrase, but “honest rock” has unquestionably been their ethos since their start back in 2011—and few bands embody its spirit like they do. With songs that echo the rawness and sincerity of the cities around which its members grew up—Detroit, Baltimore, Philadelphia—the band blends the basics of roots rock and folk with layers of bolstering piano and organ, intricate pedal steel leads, and melodic choruses backed by satisfying vocal harmonies. Rooted in the songwriting of frontman Andrew Wesley Harris, The Naked Sun strive equally toward Petty’s pop genius, Springsteen’s storytelling, Dylan’s social consciousness, and the energy of My Morning Jacket.

CIVILIANA – ‘Melt’

About CIVILIANA

Influenced by the organic sound and artistic freedoms of the alt-rock genre, CIVILIANA brings an unfiltered sound laced with raw emotion and primal physicality to their music and shows.

The origins of CIVILIANA began in a high school band class in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. It was there that aspiring drummer Calen Trentini met future bassist Spencer Daley. As they learned their chosen instruments side by side, they soon formed a duo before adding their friend Adam Wilson – a guitarist from a neighbouring high school – into the mix.

After high school, the trio went their separate ways before reconnecting in Vancouver as adults in 2015. CIVILIANA was formed a few months later with Calen’s potent vocals and kinetic drumming skills anchored by Spencer’s technical aptitude on bass and keys along with Adam’s supporting vocals and seamless songwriting fusion of pure alt-rock with modern electronic influences.

Feeling empowered to turn their shared musical passions into a professional pursuit, the group recorded their first EP Out the Window in 2016 with producer and former high school classmate Daniel Ponich. This collaboration proved to be serendipitous as Daniel subsequently joined the band, providing guitar, key, and percussion elements that proved to be the group’s missing link.

From there, CIVILIANA sent their new rough demos to award-winning producer Ryan Worsley (Dear Rouge, Said The Whale, Sophia Danai), who along with co-producer Matt Di Pomponio developed the group’s upgraded sound – an emotionally raw and clean electronic sound drenched in pure rock ‘n’ roll.

CIVILIANA emerged from the studio with a trio of new 2019 singles – the spring release “Carry a Light”, the summer effort “Void”, and the fall song “Melt” – to offer listeners a visceral listening experience into themes of loneliness, isolation, and ultimately understanding – all created with the band’s own authentic originality, but continuously blended with the traditional elements of the alt-rock genre.

Abraham – ‘Blue Moon’

About Abraham

Intimate, authentic and powerful are the perfect words to describe this dark, alt folk artist’s sound. Abraham has become known for moving audiences to tears. Her unique voice and vulnerable lyrics, hold listeners and carry them on a journey through time and feeling. There is a strength in feeling deeply, and in exploring the depths of our nature, of human pain, trauma and triumph. The honesty and emotional fierceness in Abraham’s voice channels that exploration. Quietly working away, gaining impressive traction since her first release in 2014, she has since toured throughout and across Canada on several occasions. Been invited to play at some of Canada’s largest, and most coveted music festivals (Sunfest Country Music Festival, Westward Fest, CMW, Rifflandia, Song & Surf, Tiny Lights) and shared the stage with some of BC’ s major and budding indie talents along the way. (Haley Blais, Jordan Klassen, Luca Fogale, Fionn).

Receiving regular rotation on college stations across Canada for songs off her first release, she is currently in the studio gearing for an exciting year. Based in Victoria, this young artist blends a low-fi nuance with uniquely crafted folk songs, full of pop sensibility and powerfully emotive lyrics. Likened to that of Feist, Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker.
