Samina – ‘Friend’

About Samina

Samina is a 21-year-old singer/songwriter from Metro Detroit/NYC. She describes her sound as “rainy window pop,” and the wistful, melancholic lyrics are inspired by artists like Lorde, Gracie Abrams, and Noah Cyrus.

She released her debut single, “Prom,” on all streaming platforms in July. Since then, she’s been featured in j’adore Detroit, SoundThread Music, and Galaxy Magazine among others. She’s been featured on Spotify playlists curated by Streamefy and Chill Select. Mat Smith, a writer for Clash Magazine, described her music in his blog (Further.) as being “built from gentle, ebbing layers of guitar, piano and discrete electronics, presented with a gauzy ethereality as if looking back on an especially poignant memory.”

Her second single, “Friend,” is about lost love and was written during the beginning of quarantine. It touches on idealism, naivety, and letting go.

She taught herself how to play guitar when she was 15, started writing songs at 18, and now she’s 21 and there are few things she loves more than music. She grew up in a South Asian, Muslim household, and the intimate, reflective style of her writing is inspired by the Urdu poetry she was always surrounded with.

Currently, she’s finishing up her degree at New York University where she studies film and business. She’s active on Twitter (@saifeesamina) and Instagram (@samina.saifee), and her debut song is available wherever you listen to music.
