One of Last Day Deaf‘s X-mas’ gifts, is today’s exclusive premiere on Newton Circus‘ ‘Lost Without You‘; Singapore-based alt-indie quartet has been inspired by “the powerful grandeur of Icelandic landscape, with its rolling valleys and auroric mists” and the result is a wonderful, melodious indie tune in which the bar is raised by its anthemic chorus. Don’t expect any ‘cutback’ melody-wise by Singapore’s “Fantastic Four”; Just at full length passionate indie expression full of soaring harmonies.

Lost Without You‘ is out via Umami Records.

Brief profile

“Singapore, a small city-state by the equator, renowned for it’s (sic) strict laws, efficient society and eclectic food, have uncovered a new musical gem in the form of indie-alternative quartet, Newton Circus.” – Spill Magazine (CA) Newton Circus is a Singapore-based indie-alternative quartet. Compared to the likes of The National, Death Cab for Cutie and Notwist, their eponymous debut EP in 2013 was given coverage on publications like City Nomads and Culturepush, as well as airplay on LUSH 99.5FM, Newton Circus released singles Twilight and Love You Like That thereafter. After a hiatus, the band released On & On a four-track EP in 2017 that garnered positive noises around the world. In Japan, digital publications like Indiegrab and UROROS praised the album’s lyricism; across the Pacific, On & On hit the college radio circuit, getting on rotation at stations like KPFK (Los Angeles, US), Radio Canada (Vancouver, Canada), WLTL (Illinois, US), and more. Back in Singapore, the title track landed on Spotify Singapore’s Viral 50 chart whilst being highlighted by Bandwagon for its well thought-out instrumentation. Newton Circus’ current release is Jericho, quickly landing on Spotify charts and playlists on Spotify (Indie Shuffle, Just Rock, New Music Friday Singapore/ Malaysia/ Vietnam/ Philippines/ Taiwan) in its opening weekend, in addition to being featured as Track Of The Day on tastemaking critic blog The 405 who hailed it as a “meditative and magnetic” piece.

One paragraph about the artist

Newton Circus is a Singapore-based indie-alternative quartet writing for the careworn, for the lovelorn, for the sentimentalist, for the whispering paramours, for the wistful daydreamers.

What’s the story behind this single/album? (What inspired you to make this single/EP/album, anything noteworthy you’d like to highlight to the press) Lost Without You grabs the spiritual baton from Newton Circus’ previous release, Jericho, and jumps off the proverbial cliff into deeper waters. Driven by Kenneth’s quivering falsettos, the band drew inspiration from Icelandic terroir in the crafting of the song, so much so they shot the single’s teaser announcements in parts of the Scandinavian island-country. The spirited single will be the band’s final release for 2018. – Does the artist/band have a quote they’d like to share about this single/album? “The powerful grandeur of Icelandic landscape, with its rolling valleys and auroric mists, has been my creative outlet for rumination and solace. Lost Without You is something of a longing for this peace, one that doesn’t just rattle the windows but reverberates the spirit. I believe that it is only at this level, both inspired and contrasted by nature, that we can yearn for what is most important to being human.” -Kenneth Ong
