After 30 years a sequel to a film that rightly deserves to be called a masterpiece is being released that I never expected to ever be made even though it has been talked about for many years. It was originally released in 1982 to some very unjustified harsh and negative reviews because it was ahead of its time. I feel some were expecting it to be like “Alien” or “Star Wars“, which it certainly isn’t. In subsequent years it has become one of the most influential films of all-time and is now regarded as a classic and the masterpiece it always was in all it’s different versions. The Final Cut being the definitive and best.

That film is “Blade Runner” which was brilliantly directed by Ridley Scott and starred Harrison Ford.

When its sequel “Blade Runner 2049” is finally released in October we will be returning to the amazing universe created by Ridley Scott based on Philip K. Dick‘s classic 1950s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?“. Harrison Ford is returning as Rick Deckard alongside Ryan Gosling.

From the trailer it seems like we’re in for an action packed and intelligent ride from  director Denis Villeneuve. A brilliant film-maker who is amassing an impressive catalogue of quality films all in different genres. Each film I’ve seen has his own unique style and originality which I feel he will bring to “Blade Runner 2049“.

What really stands out for me and grabs me in the trailer for “Blade Runner 2049” is that it seems the film will have the same strikingly beautiful cinematography that typifies all of Ridley Scott’s films. Who this time is acting as executive producer and was instrumental in choosing Denis Villeneuve to direct.

Now to be honest I’m not sure that a sequel is really necessary, because I love the ambiguity that was left with the unanswered questions of the original film and works beautifully as a stand alone film. Although what does have me excited more than anything is that it is directed by Denis Villeneuve who directed the brilliantly original science fiction film “Arrival” which was released in 2016. I feel from this and His previous films I’ve also seen, “Prisoners” and “Sicario“, that the sequel will have the heart, depth and intelligence of those films to match that of the original “Blade Runner“.

With many questions left unanswered from the original “Blade Runner” it seems that we are maybe going to have them answered at last.
