What inspired you to first start making music? And how did you come to be in your current incarnation? Or if you prefer, a brief bio about you.

Chateau Chateau is a group of five, and we’ve all loved music our whole lives. The project started in our singer/guitarist, Alex’s, home studio where, along with guitarist Zane, they began demoing what would become Chateau Chateau’s first EP, Evidence. From there, drummer Tom, bassist Myles, and keytarist Rae joined in to help turn the demos into finished songs. Since then, we’ve written a full-length album, Princess, together that will be released, following three singles, on July 31.

Provide us with some info about your latest release…

Black Boots is the first single from our upcoming album. Black Boots is about a struggle with identity, sexuality, and self-doubt. It’s about confronting one’s inner saboteur while wrestling with self-hatred and realizing you aren’t the person you want to be. Black Boots is the part of a saga that unfolds throughout the entirety of Princess, where the narrator finds the power to carry the freedom and determination to become who they’ve always wanted to be, Black Boots and all.

Which ones would you consider your main influences both music-wise & non-music-wise?

Of Montreal, Talking Heads, The Smiths, New Order, Tears for Fears, The Cure, Pixies, David Bowie, Cake, Car Seat Headrest, Father John Misty, Metronomy, Taylor Swift, T.S. Elliot, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. We’ve also been into Wallows, Liza Anne, and Bleachers, lately.

In what way does your sound differ from the rest genre-related artists/bands and why should we listen to your music? In other words, how would you describe your sound?

I think we’re unique in the way our member’s influences come together. We want to write pop songs, but we’re not very good at it so we end up with songs that are a little left field but familiar. I think that is why people find us endearing, we’re a little goofy and we kinda suck, but we don’t give af.

Please name your 3 desert islands albums, movies & books…

Albums: Pet Sounds, Is This It, Fear Fun

Movies: My Own Private Idaho, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Books: Anything Hemmingway, Still Life With Woodpecker, The Bible

Do you prefer studio or performing live and why?

Alex prefers the studio because he loves writing. The rest of us prefer the stage because we enjoy the pure fun and rush of getting to play to an audience full of dancing and singing people. We put on a show full of confetti cannons, huge props, dancers, and matching outfits. It’s a ton of work but it’s insanely fun.

Is there any funny-unique story you would like to share with us, always in relation to your music ‘career’?

It’s hard to pick just one, haha. Anytime we get on stage it gets a little funny-unique.

Which track of your own would you point out as the most unique and why?

I think our most unique track is Breakthrough, which will be released July 3rd. It’s definitely a true Chateau Chateau song, but Zane takes the lead vocal for the first time in this group and absolutely nails it. It’s a laid-back groovy little number that’s a bit different from our usual sound. I hope our listeners like it as much as we do!

Would you like to share with our readers your future plans?

Our current plans are to release our full length album, Princess, July 31 and to get back on the stage as soon as it’s safe to gather a bunch of people in a club somewhere. We’re always writing and recording, so we’ll continue releasing new music for the foreseeable future.
